President Xiomara Castro: Historic for Honduras to hold presidencies of the Celac and SICA
The President of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, described this moment for her country, holding two presidencies, the Tempore, that of the Central American Integration System (SICA) and that of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (Celac).
In statements to journalists on the sidelines of the VIII Summit of the Celac, held in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Castro said that this is a challenge for Honduras.
"In the history of our country, a president had never had the opportunity to have two presidents, "pro tempore," he said.
The Honduran President stated that the opportunity and support received from the 32 other countries that make up the Celac is a fundamental and a pride for the people of her country.
During the summit, Castro explained that he will hold several bilateral meetings with different heads of state to create a strategy to start this presidency.
Honduras assumes on this day from the hands of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines the presidency of the Celac, which was definitively constituted at the Caracas Summit in December 2011.
At the end of last November, El Salvador also transferred to Honduras the presidency of the SICA, during the LVIII Ordinary Meeting of Heads of State and Government of the organization.
SICA, founded in 1991, is composed of Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama, Honduras, Belize and the Dominican Republic as full members, while Mexico, the United States and other countries have the status of regional observers.
